Most Likely to Succeed at Work: How Work Is Just Like High School -- Crib Notes for Getting Along and Getting Ahead Amidst Bullies, Teachers' Pets, Cheerleaders, and Other Members of the "Class"
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (June, 2003)
Authors: Wilma Davidson and Jack Dougherty

Learning To Be A More Successful You
This book about maximizing your success in the business world offers common sense advice about how to achieve your goals. The authors' organization combined with clever humor makes you look forward to the next chapter. When you read the examples that the authors use to emphasize that chapter's purpose, you smile, nod, and think this is way to successfully approach this person or problem. At the completion of the book, you can visualize the person you can become and you have the tools to be that person.

Insights you can use
This is a smart, practical guide to understanding people at work (and dealing with them more effectively) -- using insights from the social experiences we all had in high school. It's a great premise, and the authors really deliver. They are funny, sharp, and wise. Stop complaining about people at work and get this book to learn how to improve things once and for all!

The Simplest Truths Are True
Although this book truly is laugh-out-loud funny, the core message is quite serious, and tremendously worthwhile. There are so many ways to type personality, but most of them are esoteric and klutzy. This delightful book delivers a very insightful punch by wisely linking our possible personality typing to our common, miserable, heroic and laughable universal experience: high school. The insights in this book are so deep that you will definitely learn a great deal about yourself and your colleagues. It is also a wonderful gift book; you and your friends will laugh for hours and leave wiser.

Behind the Throne
Published in Paperback by Highbridge Press (June, 2000)
Author: Martin J. Dougherty
Average review score:

A fantasy with real swords
Behind the Throne is classified fantasy-adventure because it takes place in a medieval world that never was. This lets an author have person-to-person battle instead of the faceless conflicts of modern war, arrange events at will without having to align with history, imagine new cultures and nations.

This is not the usual fantasy-adventure romp with lots of naked sweaty muscles, comic-book violence, and a celebratory clench-a-wench ale-swigging at the end. There is no magic, no mysticism, and less philosophizing than you find in an exchange between two hard-boiled detectives. It is battle and war and pain and death from beginning to end, with small bits of personal peace and reward. Good people die, and bad people live too long. Moral questions do not have easy solutions, and even the hard solutions aren't perfect. I liked it very much.

Dougherty has a clear, transparent writing style that focuses attention on the story rather than the author. His characters are described by their actions, so they develop a little more slowly than "The noble Pancha Dru with his eagle's countenance and heroic heart" but feel more like people than like dreams. I don't feel like chucking Alvin Riall under the chin and feeding him cookies, which is the impulse most of the modern ilk of fantasy heroes and heroines arouse in me. Dougherty even has female characters with independence and fingthing ability -- which is not an anachronism. Medieval chatelaines held their husband's castles in their absence, under war and siege, in all reality.

Martin Dougherty is a science teacher and a fencing coach. He has written popular fantasy-adventure gaming materials for several years. The gamers I have known demand logic and realism in their fantasy wars. Dougherty has successfully transferred those elements to novel-length fiction. I hope he writes more.

Carpe Hunc Librum
Martin J. Dougherty has created a very clearly-drawn world for this superb piece of heroic fantasy. This allows the plot to move smoothly from place to place at a cracking pace, while still allowing ample character development. The plot concerns Duke Alvin Riall, who is victim to the machinations of the treasonous baron Terrik. The former is banished from Valdir, making it easier for Terrik to make an attempt for the throne. the story mixes political intrigue with epic battles and duels. It never drags because the action is is so well described, and the characterisation is so good. There are some really sympathetic characters in Riall and King Yantr, both are struggling to do what is necessary as well as what is honourable and right. There are also really cool characters in Terrik, and the double-hard Sir Evrik, my personal favourite. i wholeheartedly recommend this book, even to those who would not normally read heroic fantasy, there are no dragons or wizards here, only the location is mythical. Dougherty is better than Gemmell, and I look forward to his next book.

Even 'we' like adventure!
Right, I'm one of those very strange people who doesn't 'get on' with Pratchett and I don't care for Sharpe books much either. You've guessed it - I'm a girl. So, why did I like 'Behind the Throne' by MJ Dougherty so much? This book is all fighting - from duels to skirmishes, from sieges to pitch battles and on to all out war. And, it seems to happen every three pages or so. Yet, I loved it.

The characterisation is such that, even without any kissing and not a description of a dress in sight, 'us girls' can still appreciate a rollicking good read full of cunning, intrique , adventure and daring. So, if you like books where your villians are villianous, your heroes are everthing they should be, chivalry and honour are alive and well and they all have very, very, big swords then give this book a go. It's the one for you. Will someone hurry up and make a film of this so Sean Connery can play Evrik before it's too late. Watch me be first in the queue come opening night!

Greatest war story/coming of age tail ever told
I was first introduced to this serioes at school, we were assigned to read it for English, before this book all books assigned to us in school were all garbage and I expected the same, as did most the other students in my class, most wouldnt bother to read it, so the teacher read it aloud in class, for most of it upuntil the half way mark I ignored most of it, until it dawned on me that this book was actualy sounding o.k. When I got home i got my copy from the bookshelf and actualy started to read it, and I read at any chance I had, and when I finished I read the second and third and then had to wait while the rest were written and released
The amazing story starts off with a group of teenagers going camping, and when they return the find the Australia has been taken over by another country, they go to the bush again to hide, but can't just sit back and do nothing and decide to fight back in what ever way they can, although unconventional, when all is said and done and the series is over they made a huge impact on the war, sometimes planned, sometimes fluked, of coarse not all survive and with every loss you can not help but feel the emotional pain of the others, it is the best comming of age story I have read, and although it is listed as a young adult series, it will be unforgetable to all ages and you will develop a bond with Ellie, Homer, Kevin and the rest of the gang, I have never fell in love with any fictional charactors the way I did with these guys, not even in T.V series
A story like this comes along once in a life time, do not, and I mean do not missss this book

awesome
All the books in this series are brilliant

Marsden knows how to attract the teen reader...
The Dead of Night is a fascinating follow-up to Tomorrow, When the War Began. I teach a class of 7th and 8th graders and we have read both books aloud throughout the current year. The kids simply love this series. Marsden is no dummy! He knows how to cleverly pull in the teen readers. In this series, the adults have managed to screw things up and it is up to the kids to correct things. He offers a sense of adventure along with a sense of power to his teen readers. Furthermore, he deals directly, yet responsibly, with a number of issues that are especially important to teens. Somehow, he manages to capture the true feelings and concerns that are universal for most teens.

Grow 'Em Right; A Guide to Creating Habitat and Food Plots

Finally, A Book For The North
I have been reading about hanitat development, food plots and white-tailed deer for years. I have also been frustrated for years because almost everything written has been set in the south. As a Wisconsin guy, I can finally say "I found it"!
Grow Em Right has got it right. Dougherty and Dougherty really know how things work in the north. Their book is practical, easy to follow and really makes sense. Every member of my hunting camp is reading the book and we are starting to implement their suggestions ... If you are into Quality Deer Managment, food plots, and habitat development on small properties(under 1,000 acres) this is the book for you.

I Tried it,I like It
I bought this book and took it to my property last weekend. I can't believe how easy it is to follow. I planted two food plots "by the book" and set up a deer sanctuary.
Next weekend we will be setting up hunting plots and treestands. The plot layouts were great and very easy to understand. These guys have "been there and done that" and they really know their stuff. I'm buying a couple more books to leave in camp for the other guys to read.

I Wish I Had This Book Three Years Ago
Grow "Em Right is the most useful habitat development and food plot book I have ever read. In fact I wish I had it as a guidebook three years ago when I started developing my property for quality whitetail hunting. It would have saved me time and money.
The Doughertys have written an easy to follow practical book on how to create better deer hunting with habitat development and food plots. They have given me dozens of new ideas and hundreds of useful tips.
Especially great is their chapter on creating hunting plots, complete with diagrams on food plot layouts. I have never seen this kind of detail and insight in print before.
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in improving the whitetail deer hunting on their property, especially if the property is smaller than 1,000 acres in size. It should also be standard reading for hunting club members interested in Quality Deer Managment.
It is well worth the twenty bucks. I have already bought three for my hunting buddies.

Tomorrow, When the War Began

You'll always be on the edge of your seat...
no matter how many times you have read the book. This is one of the most brilliant pieces of young adult literature ever published. The story is captivating, set in the current time in a small country town in rural Australia. The story of eight teenagers grips your heart and won't let go until the last page, and then you are hanging out for the sequel.

The lives of these young adults forced to adapt to a different way of life, is written so fluently that it feels almost as if you were one of them.

A timeless story which will never lose it's touch on the people who have read it and those who are reading it.

John Marsden is my favourite author, and the 'Tomorrow' series are my favouriet books. I even have two of them autographed!! His use of language to make a character 'speak' is amazing, more so is his ability to write from the point of view of a teenage girl fighting to survive each day of a war over Australia.

A rare book hits the fan!
I started to read this book when a friend told me how good BURNING FOR REVENGE was. I new nothing about it, only that it was good. When I read Tomorrow... I was instantly hooked. The series is vey well written and packed full of action. There is a mixture of Action, Love, friendship and a strong will the group of teens to survive the downs of War, help free there families and return life to the way it was. It is the perfect book for young adults. If you like lots of Explosions and heart pumping, page turning, edge-of-your-seat excitement, John Marsden's Tomorrow series is the path to go down. From the first page to the last it catches you in it's grasp and won't let go until you die of starvation or are wrestled to the ground by family members. It really will take you to hell and back.

This Rare book hits the fan!

The First in seven of one of the best series of all time
Every year for Christmas, my parents like to buy me several books that I would probably never hear of and never try...they call it broadening my horizons, and a couple of years ago this book was among the pile. I started reading it Christmas day and I refused to leave my room until I finished it. It is one of the most gripping, suspenseful, poignant, intelligent books written for teens that I have ever read. Marsden appears to be one of the few adults who actually understands teenagers, and gives us the credit we deserve. In this book, he tells a tale of 8 typical Australian teens, on a camping trip in the bush, only to come home and find their country has been invaded. Bonding together, they form an accidental guerilla group, who make a life for themselves in the Bush, while risking their lives to take back their country. Though the book is incredibly suspenseful, edge-of-your seat thriller, what Marsden does best is character development. He makes his book at one realistic with incredibly detail, and allows the characters to spend plenty of time ruminating on their actions, morality, their own fear of mortality, and their ability to cope with the death and capture of their friends and loved ones. Finally, here is a book, told through the eyes of Ellie, and thoughtful, down-to-earth protagonist, who allows us to see that teens are much more adult then many give them credit for. A must read.

The Tomorrow Series is awesome!
Wow! These books make you feel like you're in there with them. The imagery is overwhelming! John Marsden creates the characters so vividly, you feel like you know them. When something happens to the characters, you are in shock. I feel like I'm in the story! The plot is amazing! It's so full of action! You're never bored. I couldn't put the book down! It leaves you in such suspense, you can't wait for the next book to come out!

Well, get on with it!
One day I walked into the library, and one of the librarians handed me a book, "Here, you'll like this one." Well, I read it, 'Tomorrow, When the War Began.' I absolutly loved it! I didn't find out that it was a series until later, but I was absolutly enthraled when I read the others. I didn't talk to anybody for weeks; there was no ungluing myself from the books. I can't wait to read this next one. Please hurry up, Mr. Marsden! There is a wide range of fans waiting to nab your book off the shelf as soon as it gets there.

Outstanding!
I absolutely love John Marsden. I've read nearly all his books:so much to tell you, letters from the inside, Nortons hut-they were all great, but this book was the best of the best. This book seems a bit shorter than the others, but it's probably because I read it so fast! Even though this was the best book out of the Tommorow series, I suggest that you read the books in order, otherwise it will ruin some of the endings. Here's the order: Tommorow when the war began, the dead of night, the killing frost(US)/The third day the Frost(UK), Darkness be my friend, Burning for revenge, the night is for hunting, the otherside of dawn. The last 2 books can be special ordered from the UK.

Very good, as always
The Tomorrow series may be the best seven books I've ever read. John Marsden is an excellent writer, and he almost make me think that this war is real.
But this book probably is the worst of the seven. It wasn't such a thrill reading it as the others, as this book's just made to build up the tension for the grand finale in "The Other Side of Dawn". The only thing that really happens is that they run a daycare center for some feral kids, and that they get aware of soldiers lurking outside Hell.
Luckily, Marsden can with his spell-binding writing still capture the reader in this book.

The best read in the world
This is the story of the century. This is a definite must read. This is part of one of the most phenominal series of this century. This gripping story will have you guessing. The details will set a scene all its own. With a cliffhanger, it will leave you begging for the next book.

How To Talk to Your Baby
Published in Paperback by Avery Penguin Putnam ()
Author: Dorothy P. Dougherty
Average review score:

Very Valuable Information - Not obvious
As a professional and parent of a 15 month old, I found the information in How to Talk to Your Baby very helpful. This book offers a fun step by step program that is easy to do. I feel, many times, chances to help my child learn would have been overlooked. I feel it is incorrect to assume that parents instinctively know how to create the best learning environment for their child. The author explains what to do, why you should do it and how to do it. I have read many baby books, and found this to be one of the most valuable because the suggestions could be used anywhere. This book offered a more in depth look at language development. We learned what to expect at each level. It was easy to read, and packed with lots of great research. This is definitely worth the read. I have recommended to many of my friends and they all have learned new things and enjoyed this book.

Great Source for Parents
I have been a speech-language pathologist for many years and am always seeking ways to emphasize to parents how very important it is to talk and read with their children, no matter how young or how old. This book goes beyond that, offering specific suggestions to parents as to how to create a language rich environment, yet allowing for creativity on the part of the caregiver. It is easy to read and well organized. I will certainly be recommending it to parents as well as others working with early childhood populations. Judy Almy

Time to cut back on the kiddie videos!
Dorothy Dougherty is a Speech/Language Specialist who works with adults and children. She is the co-founder of the Atlantic Behavioral Care - a center developed to aid people with speech difficulties. Dorothy believes that ". . . during the first three years of life, parents help "shape" their baby's brain and set the foundation for their life's learning." Now, that is both an exciting and terrifying realization for me, personally. My daughter is now 2 ½, and I sure hope that I haven't already blown it. Dorothy's book explains that communication is made up of three basic parts. The first is Receptive Language; this is when we attach meaning to a particular word. The next part is called Expressive Language which includes word choice, vocal tone, any gestures, and rate of speech. The final part is the actual Speech, the sounds that you create with your mouth to form words. The book is divided up into sections dealing with creating "a language-rich environment," a list of language milestones, ideas and toys to help increase vocabulary, a sample case story, a glossary, and an extensive list of resources. The book is easy to read, written in simple terms, and in a conversational style. When I read it, I found myself making many notes about activities to try with my daughter and I can't wait to pass the book along to my sister, who has a one-year-old. So many of the suggestions are easy and natural: talk to your baby, follow their cues, don't push, be a good model, no baby talk (okay, I'm not so good at this one) and use the proper pronouns, play song and word games, read to your child, and "praise, praise, praise", among many others. Most importantly, I have learned that it is important to talk to your child and that the television does not work as well as your "live" interaction. I guess that means it's time to cut back on the Blue's Clues and Teletubbie videos.

The Edges of War: Beggars Would Ride Tuyet an Barrel of a Gun
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (October, 2001)
Author: Brian Dougherty
Average review score:

A good read
Dougherty spins a good yarn. His stories reflect a real understanding of and sympathy for the people who inhabit a complex and troubled part of the world. The persons who live in these stories are caught in the grip of historical forces beyond their control, and with the practiced eye of a professional who lived through these tragic events, the author tells the tales with the authority of one who has been there. A good read.

Insightful stories.
Authors like Dougherty who have studied the languages of Southeast Asia have insights that escape those who observe the region from outside.

A dramatic debut...
This first-time author has delivered a dramatic debut with "The Edges of War." Tapping into his lengthy experiences in Indochina, Brian Dougherty brings a unique viewpoint to the seemingly endless debate of how Americans have impacted -- and are in turn impacted by -- this far corner of the world. But ultimately, politics and geography are only the raw ingredients of this book. Dougherty is a story teller -- and a fine one at that. He takes his readers through a foreign land, making it accessible and alluring. He has created characters of depth and compassion (a far cry from the flat stereotypes of so much popular fiction), but never neglects to deliver the sort of compelling action that keeps readers turning the pages. His stories are both illuminating and entertaining, a potent combination that helped make it the recommended book in the new issue of "First Command magazine," a 260,000-reader quarterly for military professionals.
